First Notes about Light Design

Renzo Di Chio

After three months after my arrival at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele of Messina, Italy. I have had the opportunity to complete an introductory course to “Light Design” with one of the most active external collaborators related to the theater.

Renzo Di Chio, a professional with over 30 years of experience in the world of the lighting stage, self-taught for scarce training resources that existed at the beginning and constantly moving by bringing the different theatrical productions of his city to the rest of Italy and abroad. Aside from his professional motivations, we can find in his personality, a being who loves his city even being aware of its limitations and bad practices, but attempts by disseminating disseminate the brightest and optimistic aspects of it.

After the theater had completed its season plays and after a month of renting their spaces for dance rehearsals and performances. The theater was no activity, for this reason Renzo scheduled the course which I detail below.

The course begins with an explanation from past to its present theater, playing songs like its former structure before the great earthquake of 1908 earthquake until its renovation and opening in 1985. It develops the theme explaining its characteristics of Italian theater – horseshoe, orders box, …-untitled-1

Delving deeper into the subject we focus within the scenario, where we perceive your organization and how placement of the different foci of light and scenic elements.

Special attention to the First Pipe, which is set as first line structure and spotlights on the stage.

gradiciaRenzo makes us understand the importance of the “Graticcia”, The Grid, so that it is essential to understand the theater as we understand it today.

The essential elements for managing lighting scene are;
  • Spotlights (Fixed and Mobile)
  • Hitching structure or Fifth.
  • Dimmer
  • Consoles
He explains the different characteristics of the types of light projectors like;
  • PAR (Parabolic Aluminum Reflector)
  • PC (Plano Convex)
  • IRIS
  • DOMINOS- Difusse
  • SAGOMATONE – The definition of the shadow depends on the distance from the focus.

With this introduction we begin to understand the different lighting techniques and projectors are more appropriate for according to purpose.

The divide between external and internal from the scenario.
  • Direct Light
  • Frontal
  • Backlighting
  • Cutting lights, placed on the sides. They are well used in dance performances.
  • Piombo Light, is specified for a target.

The explanation of the importance of human resources within the theatrical technical team are like mechanics and electricians.

Personal notes from Renzo

  • Work and be guided by the music.
  • Always work symmetry in the organization of the foci, knowing vary their intensity.
  • The lighting designer should always know when to change the light transition.
